Dance x Academics - Outstanding Achievements In PSLE 2024

In an academically driven society as Singapore where every parent's primary concern with school-going children is their educational results, we are sometimes resigned to the fate of losing students whenever PSLE (Primary 6) is around the corner. In recent years, there has even been cases when students as young as 6 withdraw as they are going into Primary 1 and all available time must be devoted to tuition. And this is not just a phenomenon that is isolated to us as our peers in the dance fraternity are faced with the same challenges where PSLE means that a child's dance journey must grind to a halt.

However, we are of the humble opinion that dance actually offers students an outlet to engage in an activity that betters their mental and physical wellbeing, leaving them recharged for their academic pursuits. In this article, we present to you Mr Wang Menglong, who continued on in his Ballet journey in the pivotal academic year of PSLE!

Read on to find out more about his inspiring and remarkable achievements in PSLE 2024

1) What was your PSLE score?

AL 5D.

2) What was your average AL score from Primary 4 to your PSLE Preliminary Exam?

I got AL 4 in my Primary 4 exams. In Primary 5 and 6, it is on average about AL 6 or 7, and Distinction for Higher Chinese.

3. Did you participate in the RAD Ballet Exam in April 2024 which was just 6 months before the actual PSLE Exam?

Yes. I participated in the RAD Grade 5 Ballet Exam.

4. What was your RAD Ballet Exam result?

My RAD Grade 5 Ballet Exam score was 70 (High Merit).

5. Did your weekly ballet lessons affected your schoolwork and PSLE preparation in any way? Please share why it didn't and how you managed to achieve this?

No. Personally, I feel that the weekly ballet lessons wouldn't really affect one's school work and preparations for the PSLE exams. It's really about your time management. One should either have a timetable or a to-do-list which can help in being clear with what to do for each day of the week.

6. In your opinion and experience, what is the best way to juggle both your schoolwork and dance classes successfully in a student's PSLE year?

"Quality over Quantity" is the most important. There is no need to do so many papers or practices. Doing corrections, taking note of your mistakes, learning from them and reviewing them frequently is the most important aspect of your preparation in my opinion. This lowers the chances of one making the same mistakes in similar questions again. If one understands his or her weaknesses, works on them, does sufficient practices (3 papers a day with revision in my opinion) and combine it with good time management, there is no need to do too much work. Hence, you would still be able to attend the weekly ballet lessons without affecting your studies.

7. Did you consider withdrawing from your dance class before you entered into PSLE year or after you started your Primary 6 school year? Please share why you decided to continue on in your dance journey?

No. I had been practicing ballet for quite a long time (since 2016) and my weekly ballet lessons had never affected my studies. Hence, I believed that it would not have affected my preparations for PSLE.

8. Can you share if your dance journey here actually helped in your PSLE academic pursuits (e.g. Help you to destress by engaging in a weekly activity that you enjoyed)?

Yes. It definitely helped me reduce some of my anxieties and stress, as the Ballet lessons were able to help take my mind off my studies. This also increases the quality of my study sessions, making me more efficient.

9. What is the name of your Secondary School?

My Secondary School is Raffles Institution.

We thank Menglong for sharing with us how he juggled both dance and academic in his PSLE year, and achieved excellent results in both. We trust his personal story will give insights for students and parents to ponder upon nearing their child's first important academic milestone (PSLE). If you have been with us till this point of the article, we thank you for your time, cheers!
